2. Patience.
We frequently wish to "get even" when we have been wronged, when we have made a terrible choice, when we are hurt or suffering. This is why we typically react with rage and resentment when our ego is wounded (when someone calls us names). We choose to respond in a self-centered manner because we believe that someone is taking advantage of us.

Because of this, your initial reaction when someone criticizes you is to defend yourself. But, you cannot be "protected" if you lack the ability to defend yourself. You cannot learn to prevent regret if you are unable to protect yourself. You can't help but act regrettably.
